We intend to alter these cleaning industries gradually, beginning with laundry and dry cleaning services and moving on to cleaning services for homes, businesses, and vehicles.
One problem is that in India, cleaning services such as laundry & dry cleaning, residential/commercial building cleaning and car wash use harmful chemicals that are carcinogenic and not bio-degradable. Perchloroethylene (Perc) is the most commonly used chemical for dry cleaning. This is suspected of causing cancer and moderately toxic to people. It is classified as a pollutant in both air and water regulations. The popular alternative for Perc is hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons contain hazardous substances including trichloroethylene. They cause skin allergies, rashes and other skin diseases and also can cause lung diseases. Other concerns are that these hydrocarbons are not bio-degradable and can cause air and water pollution.
Second problem is that this cleaning services sector is very unorganized. Almost 70-80% of the sector is covered by small to medium size providers who cannot afford investments in technology to go digital and also cannot invest in the last mile service to consumers.
